Project Overview:

Newark Public Schools (NPS) retained Distinct Engineering Solutions, Inc. (DESI) to assist Belmont Runyon School with various pending UST related issues and bring closure to school sites that were incomplete from prior investigations performed by others.

DESI reviewed previously prepared environmental reports, available daily logs, correspondences, construction bid drawings and as-built drawings, etc. and submitted the missing data to NJDEP. DESI prepared a preliminary assessment report for NJDEP submission. Since the site was formerly used for several different operations including manufacturing and petroleum product storage, UST closure data was incomplete. DESI performed soil and groundwater sampling. As the samples indicated there was a presence of volatile organic compounds, DESI performed a vapor intrusion study.

DESI was in regular communication with the NJDEP and obtained approval for a Remedial Action Work Plan (RAWP) incorporating engineering controls using the construction of clean cap and the fencing restricting access and Deed Notice as an institutional control. DESI is in the process of designing a passive venting system to address issues with Vapor.

This project won an American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of NJ 2012 “Distinguished” Engineering Excellence Award.
