Project Overview:

Metropolitan Transportation Authority Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is performing renewal of existing railroad fasteners through a Design-Build Contract being undertaken by HNTB and Kiewit Infrastructure Company. Work involves replacement of over 11,000 direct fixation anchors in a 2 mile section located in Massapequa Park, New York.

Distinct Engineering Solutions, Inc. (DESI) has been retained by Kiewit as a Special Inspection Agency to oversee quality of the construction work being conducted. As part special inspection activities, DESI assisted Kiewit in conducting mock-up testing operations before commencing the actual work. To meet project demands and schedule, DESI mobilized up to 12 inspectors for round-the-clock operations. Regular activities involved performance of grout tests; anchor bolt tension tests; and anchor insert torque tests. Additional activities include epoxy application inspections and verifying the dimensions of cored holes for installation of future inserts. DESI also performed concrete inspections, and tested specimens collected for compressive strength. DESI developed, and is using, a tracking database to log progress, non-conformance, re-work, and special conditions that will be used as a final deliverable for the project.
