Project Overview:

MTA/New York City Transit has undertaken infrastructure redevelopment to improve the East Side Access Line along the east side of Manhattan. Schiavone Construction Company and John P. Picone Inc. JV (SCC-JPP) was contracted for construction of a Ventilation Building Structure and reconstruction of 55th Street between Park Avenue and Madison Avenue. The construction requires demolition of a portion of 55th Street and its sidewalk to relocate utilities, and excavation to construct the street level air plenum and sidewalk gratings.

Distinct Engineering Solutions, Inc. (DESI) prepared several plans as part of Environmental Management, and assisted SCC-JPP with implementation. DESI provided environmental awareness training and characterized subsurface soil. DESI also prepared Hazardous Material Management, Spill Prevention and Control, Dust Control, Waste Management & Recycling, Erosion & Sediment Control, and Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans.

DESI also performed test pits and collected samples to characterize subsurface soil and groundwater, identified soil disposal facilities, and overseeing waste and spoil disposal.

DESI collected concrete and grout samples and performed compression tests, conducted steel welding and rebar inspections, inspected the shotcrete application process and provided shotcrete core laboratory testing services, performed tie-back anchor and rock bolt proof and performance tests. Work performed by DESI was reviewed and approved by a diverse project team of designers at MTA.
